Total figures and past growth:
Of the about 3.2m internationally mobile students in 2010, roughly 90,000 will be German, or about 3 percent of all international students in the world. Unfortunately, this number has declined relative to other upcoming sending countries of whom mostly all are in Asia or Africa, from which there will be a total of about 2.1m international students in 2010. The next decade, big opportunity in the German market:

One of the main reasons suggesting this development will continue or even expand is the fact that the German secondary, pre-university schooling period is changing from a total of 9 years to 8 years, reducing the total length of general schooling to 12 instead of 13 years. Read more...

Destinations, subjects, and duration:
In 2006, the last year for which statistics were available, out of roughly 82,000 German students abroad, 80% stayed within Europe, 13% went to the American continent, 5% chose a destination in Oceania (most likely Australia or New Zealand) and about 2% went to an Asian university. Germany’s positions in certain countries and growth rates per country:

The following percentages of German students were enrolled in the following countries in 2006: Netherlands (17%), UK (15%), Austria (14%), Switzerland (10%), USA (10%), and France (8%), which together make up about 75% of all German students studying abroad. Price elasticity:
Germany’s low price elasticity, risk-averse mentality and somewhat limited financial capabilities are also important for universities if they want to understand what proportion of the German school-leaver market (around 400,000 per year) they can attract at what annual total price (tuition, rent and cost of living included) for a typical academic year lasting between 9 and 10 months.
