Germany’s positions in certain countries and growth rates per country:
The following percentages of German students were enrolled in the following countries in 2006: Netherlands (17%), UK (15%), Austria (14%), Switzerland (10%), USA (10%), and France (8%), which together make up about 75% of all German students studying abroad. All other countries had fewer than 3,000 Germans enrolled.
Germans rank highly in some countries, while their ranking could improve in others. For example, Germans are number 1 in the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland and are also ranked highly in Hungary and the Czech Republic; they are number 6 in the UK and still number 9 in the US, but they are not in the top 10 in Australia, New Zealand or Canada. However, certain countries have had relatively high growth rates of Germans from 1996 to 2006, amongst them the Netherlands (annually more than 25%), China (around 20%), Hungary and the Czech Republic (14-15%), Australia and New Zealand (between 8.5% and 9.3%), Canada, Denmark, and Sweden (6-8%). Countries with more potential in their growth rate are Austria and Switzerland (roughly 5%), Italy, France and the UK (2-3%) as well as the US (-0.04%) and Spain (-50%).
